Course information
Accounting is an information system, providing financial information about a business organisation. It provides the basis for effective and efficient decision-making in any business. This course will prepare students for a career in business, including particular vocations in the accounting area, and will form a basis for Tertiary study in Accounting and Commerce degrees.
Students develop their knowledge and understanding of the structure and operation of Accounting models. They examine the relationship between theory and practice including the role of stakeholders and decision-making. Students develop insights into the ways and impact of change on the accounting environment. They are provided opportunities to apply cutting-edge technology and softwares in accounting.

Workload expectation
Social and Behavioural Science subjects require regular and consistent revision of course content as well as detailed planning and research for assessment tasks outside of class time in order to receive outstanding results.
Course pattern
May be available as a Minor or Major. Students can complete a minor in Accounting and combine with units from Business and\or Economics to obtain a major in Commerce.

Unit descriptions
Financial Accounting
Students will explore how to acquire, analyse, and present relevant financial data to prepare reports and support decision making. In framing inquiries, students engage with ethical issues in identifying the significance of data and conclusions, and implications of recommendations.
Advanced Financial Accounting
In this unit, students further engage with advanced financial accounting processes and analysis. They engage in advanced financial and associated non-financial analysis. Students engage with data analytics to frame and undertake investigations, use software packages to gather and analyse data and make recommendations.
Management Accounting
Students will learn how to acquire a variety of relevant data and analyse and present data to draw conclusions and solve management problems. They engage with accounting information in framing questions in investigating management problems and provide clear visualisations of data to support decision making by managers.
Contemporary Accounting
Students investigate how managers use accounting to refine and improve their outcomes in the contemporary business environment. They address current issues facing organisations and how they impact the accounting function. They engage with non-financial analysis and accounting processes that measure the value of ethical and socially responsible practices in the management of contemporary organisations and businesses and the value of sustainable business practices.
